Ground-breaking EPWP training programmes take empowerment to the next level

The City is partnering with the UWC School of Governance and the New Hope Training Organisation to provide NQF-accredited qualifications for the EPWP Transversal Support project. The EPWP Transversal Support Project is the first project in the City of Cape Town where EPWP recruits can obtain NQF-accredited qualifications through their participation on the programme.

A total of 71 recruits from the Corporate EPWP Office are benefitting from this three-year programme. Participants can achieve accredited NQF-4 and 5 level diplomas in Generic Management and a NQF-7-level accredited qualification in Public Administration. Beneficiaries working towards NQF-4 and NQF-5 diplomas in generic management began their process in December 2022, while the process to qualify for NQF-7 in public administration began on 20 February 2023.

The programme also helps the participants obtain valid driver's licences, in addition to various other training interventions on the programme, leaving them in a strong position to benefit from permanent employment with the City or elsewhere in future.

The NQF qualifications will deliver the following training outcomes:

NQF-7 – Public Administration (UWC School of government)	Introduction to Governance and Public Administration, Public Policy, Economics and Public Finance, Public Sector Financial Reporting, Public Sector Performance Measurement, Risk and Audit, Public Sector Financial Management

In addition to undertaking NQF-accredited courses, participants will benefit from various on-the-job training such as:

Code 8/10 learners and driver's classes
Accredited office administration training
Accredited word, excel, power point training
Telephone etiquette training
OHS training
First Aid Level 1-3 training
C3 Notification training
Record Management training
SAP training
Adult Basic Education and Training (Matric)
Smart Driving
Entrepreneur Training

Participants have been recruited in accordance with the City's EPWP policies.

'In South Africa, there are many people who have not been able to pursue further education and training due to economic and social challenges. To help close this gap, the City is working hard to maximise skills transfer to beneficiaries of the Expanded Public Works Programme. Projects throughout the organisation are being designed to include and develop skills among disadvantaged residents - skills that are in demand both in the municipality and in the wider economy.

'There are also many other projects throughout the City that have been designed to transfer skills to struggling jobseekers. EPWP beneficiaries are learning marketable skills in controlling alien vegetation, they are gaining experience assisting with various branches of law enforcement, or they are learning trades helping in the construction of housing projects, to name but a few.

'This latest arrangement with the UWC School of Governance and the New Hope Training Organisation shows the City is serious about empowering residents through EPWP,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management Alderman Grant Twigg.
